MOJAVE PORTALS
- Site-specific Installation
- Photography
- Land Work
The installation was commissioned by the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Massachussets. By employing the concept of portals, the work is framed as semimythical (or perhaps pseudo-mythical) through its conceptual disruption of place, space and time. It offers glimpses into a future where all bodies of water have dwindled and disappeared.
Small tiles of rocks and sand from the Mojave Desert were integrated into the surrounding landscape and linked together. They extended from inside the museum out onto the surface of Judkins Pond in the form of earthen rafts. These “portals” subvert our sense of time and place by projecting into the future and the faraway Mojave Desert simultaneously.
The work was completed in July 2023 and deinstalled in October 2023.
